5 Healthy Fat Foods for a Better You Inside & Out

Believe it or not, some fats are good for you and even provide important functions in your body, like giving you energy, protecting your organs and, most importantly, helping to potentially lower your cholesterol. So, what are healthy fats?

Unsaturated fats are the healthy fats you want to include in your diet. These are broken down into two types – polyunsaturated and monounsaturated fats.

Monounsaturated are the healthiest of all the fats because they are full of nutrients and reduce the risk of cardiovascular disease. Polyunsaturated have two main types of fat – Omega-3 and Omega-6, which are both vital for brain function and cell growth.

But where can you find healthy fats? Here’s a list of five foods that are loaded with healthy, nutrient-rich fats that you may enjoy.

Avocados

Although they are high in calories, avocados have so many health benefits. One medium avocado contains 40 percent of your daily fiber recommendations and is also sodium- and cholesterol-free. Plus, it has the antioxidant known as lutein, which helps protect your vision.

Salmon

Salmon is filled with Omega-3 fatty acids – helping to power the brain. Salmon is great for your heart health and it’s one of the best, and tastiest, ways to get the essential fat into your diet.

Olives

While olives are high in fat, it is mostly the monounsaturated kind, which you may recall is the healthiest of all fats. Olives also contribute to other health benefits, like cancer and allergy prevention. Keep in mind, however, that olives are high in sodium, so eat them in moderation.

Ground Flaxseed

If you are trying to lose weight, definitely include ground flaxseed as part of your healthy meal plan. Besides fat, it contains fiber, which helps you feel fuller longer. Plus, it can make a great substitute for those who don’t eat fish because it is full of Omega-3 fatty acids.

Dark Chocolate

It’s OK to occasionally indulge in dark chocolate because it actually contains some healthy fats along with Vitamins A, B and E. It’s also packed with calcium, magnesium and fiber! But tread lightly. Depending on the brand, some dark chocolates are loaded with sugar and saturated fat.
