Why You Should Drink Seltzer Water in Moderation

Is seltzer a smart option?

If you’re conscious about living a healthy lifestyle then you should now how important water is to your diet. Depending on activity level and where you live, how much water you should drink daily varies. However, the Mayo Clinic does suggest that woman should drink about 2.7 liters and men 3.7 liters of fluids daily.

Drinking 2.7 liters of water daily can become boring, something the beverage industry has tapped into. Over the past few years’ seltzer water and other carbonated drinks have increased in popularity largely due to the many flavorful options, and these options have become a substitute to our regular water intake. But is seltzer water a healthy substitute to regular water?

Seltzer water is carbonated water, water that has been infused with carbon dioxide at high pressure to create bubbles. And while the CDC has determined that plain seltzer can be just as hydrating as water, like everything else, seltzer should be consumed in moderation.

One problem with substituting seltzer for regular water is that seltzer doesn’t contain fluoride. Fluoride’s number one benefit is to help prevent tooth decay. The American Dental Association has concluded that fluoride is vital for maintaining long-standing oral health.

Long-term seltzer consumption can also lead to enamel erosion. Flavored seltzers can contain citric acid, the acid that is normally found in fruits like lemons and limes. Some of the flavored seltzer waters that are on the market now have the same level of citric acids as sodas. Dental studies from the University of Birmingham and Birmingham Dental Hospital have even shown that soda water can be just as harmful to you as soda.

Also keep in mind if you suffer from IBS (irritable bowel syndrome) seltzer may not be the way to go. The carbonation can irritate the stomach and intestinal lining, it can cause bloating, belching and even flatulence and in some rare cases because of the excess acid can produce stomach ulcers.

Water is essential for our body and our health and it’s okay to spice up your daily routine by adding in some carbonated water. Just be mindful, everything in moderation to sustain a healthy diet.
